Pte Ashcroft was born in Salford, Lancashire, the son of Ronald and Alice (nee Eaton) Ashcroft. His father had committed suicide in the Second World War while serving in the Royal Air Force Balloon Command. Pte Ashcroft was killed in a jeep accident.
