UNMCK - UNITED NATIONS MEMORIAL CEMETERY IN KOREA

The 43rd Memorial Service for General Whitcomb was held at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea.

The ceremony consisted of two parts.

The first part was a memorial service held at the Memorial Hall within the Cemetery, followed by a wreath-laying and commemoration ceremony at the grave of General Whitcomb in the Cemetery.

 

During the Korean War and its aftermath, General Whitcomb played a leading role in supporting the city of Busan. In particular, during the Great Busan Station Fire of 1953, he released military supplies to provide tents and food to approximately 30,000 displaced civilians who had lost their homes. He also served as the US logistics commander in the Busan area after the Korean War and actively assisted the city’s recovery.

 

In accordance with his last wish, “If I die, bury me in Korea”, General Whitcomb was laid to rest at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea. His wife, Mrs. Han Myo-sook, was later interred beside him in 2017.
