Burial Story
Pte Barclay was born in Islington, London, the son of Robert Campbell and Catherine Hannah (nee McTurk) Barclay, both of whom were born in Scotland. The date of Pte Cowan's death and his injuries as listed on his burial record make it probable that he was the victim of one of the worst friendly fire incidents of the War when US Air Force planes mistakenly dropped napalm on a contingent of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
