Burial Story
Gunner Banbury was born at Blaby, Leicestershire, and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in December 1950. In Korea, he joined the 120th battery, 61st Light Regiment, R.A. where he manned a 4.2 inch mortar. On 13 August 1952, the 1st and 3rd Royal Australian Regiment commenced active patrols to capture Chinese prisoners and Banbury and his unit acted in support. They deployed their mortars in the open and were exposed to counter-battery work from the Chinese. Banbury ? and several of his comrades ? were wounded on the 27th, in his case by a shell splinter in the abdomen. He was evacuated to the 8055th MASH where he died the following day. Doctor Richard Hornberger was serving at 8055th MASH at the time Gunner Banbury was there. Doctor Hornberger wrote the book which resulted in the film and hit T.V. series, “M.A.S.H.”.
