Burial Story

Lance Bombardier Alder was born in South Shields, County Durham, the son of James and Nellie (nee Cooper) Alder.  He was known as "Geordie" Alder (Geordie meaning somebody who comes from the Newcastle area in Co Durham).  He had been involved in the hazardous task of repairing the telephones lines to the forward Observation Posts when he was taking a break and observing the artillery in action as a shell exploded prematurely when it left the gun, killing him instantly.
